What is trauma?
Trauma is an emotional response to an event or series of events that are deeply distressing or disturbing to an individual. This can range from one-time incidents, such as accidents, the loss of a loved one, natural disasters, or violent attacks, to ongoing stressors, such as illness, emotional abuse, divorce, bullying or living in a conflict zone.
As Dr. Gabor Mate, a renowned expert in the Trauma field, aptly puts it, “Trauma is not what happens to you; it is what happens inside of you as a result of what has happened to you.”
Trauma goes beyond the events themselves; it’s about how these events impact us internally. In essence, it disrupts our internal world and can have profound consequences on our mental and emotional well-being.
What is Brainspotting?
Brainspotting (BSP) is a transformative therapy treatment that helps identify, process, and release core neurophysiological sources of emotional or body pain, trauma, dissociation and a variety of challenging symptoms.
Brainspotting (BSP) and healing through Brainspotting is different from other psychotherapies and healing modalities in a variety of ways. It strategically utilises the client’s visual field to access their brain’s self-scanning and self-healing properties.
A “Brainspot” refers to a specific eye position that is targeted during the therapeutic process. Brainspots are identified based on subtle eye movements, known as “oculomotor reflexes,” which indicate areas of heightened brain activity related to unresolved trauma or emotional distress.
By focusing on these Brainspots, individuals can access, and process deep-seated emotions, memories, and sensations associated with their traumatic experiences. Brainspotting leverages the brain’s natural healing abilities by engaging specific neural pathways through visual stimulation.
Brainspotting can be effective in treating a wide range of psychological and emotional issues including trauma, anxiety, phobias, addiction, performance anxiety, ADHD, grief and low self-esteem.
What is the difference between counselling and trauma-informed coaching?
Counselling uses various talk-based approaches to help clients reflect on their emotional struggles. While it offers valuable insight and relief, the process is often more cognitive and doesn’t necessarily address the deeper emotional layers stored in the body.
Trauma-informed coaches incorporate body-centred approaches, such as somatic healing, nervous system regulation, and mindfulness, alongside more traditional coaching techniques. This allows clients to release deeply held emotional trauma that talking alone may not reach. It focuses on helping clients move forward by integrating somatic healing practices alongside goal-setting and personal growth.
